Tillers have their place in starting new beds, but if you are looking to simply break up the soil, a good alternative to gas tillers is to use a broadfork, or you can look into sheet mulching and no till gardening. Broadforks are much easier to operate, they preserve the soils nutrients, reduce the spread of weeds and more. This site has more info.
