Mini-Tiller Cultivator 25-cc 9-in Front-Tine Tiller (1793) Overdue

This tiller is used best for cultivating small beds. Not heavy duty for ripping up a whole lawn.

The Asheville Tool Library is limited in space and tillers are in high demand in the spring. A good alternative to gas tillers is broad forks which are much easier to operate, preserve the soils nutrients, reduces the spread of weeds and more. This site has more info.

In farming its always been customary to till the soil but tilling the soil is ripping the soils fungal networks to shreds, breaking apart soil aggregates, and leaving soil structure weak and prone to wind and water erosion.  Tilling removes residue and root penetration in the soil that keep the soil in tact and help for water infiltration. Tilling exposes carbon based aggregates, microbes, and hyphie to the oxygen allowing them to turn into CO2. We recommend sheet mulching or building layers of cardboard, amendments and soil then topping off with mulch.
